More than a year ago, I visited South Korea and I had the chance to taste this fresh pure Berkshire pork BBQ. In Korea they call it "samgyeopsal" It really taste good, especially when wrapped in lettuce and grilled garlic.

I Shall Return...& I did

It was October 1944 when Gen. Douglas MacArthur fulfilled his promise to the Filipino people. Two and a half years after he left his now famous vow "I Shall Return". In commemoration of that historical return, a life size shrine was built in Palo, Leyte, Philippines.

Too bad we were in a hurry to the airport when I snapped this photo last May 2009. I would have wanted to take a better shot. Yes, the shrine is visible from the highway en-route to Tacloban City.

And now I too, have returned....

Satisfying the Need for Speed

My sister was on her second year of learning how to drive. One time she got the chance to drive along the North Luzon Express Way (NLEX) from Manila to Pampanga. She drove fast with an average speed of 100KPH. It was quite an experience for her which let out her need for speed.

I wonder what her experience would be like if she drove the luxury cars along those hi-ways. She would have loved it, I guess.

Just imagine if you had a chance to drive a Volvo or a Toyota Highlander, which do you think will give you a better ride? They both look so cool and sleek to me. I wouldn’t miss it if I get that chance.

Actually, I will always envy those who test drive and rate these luxury cars. They get to drive the high end cars and get to give their professional comments and all. They are beneficial for prospective buyers; slack jawed for us who can only dream about it (at least for the moment).

For me, my dream car to drive would be a Ferrari. Just looking at that car and you can almost already feel the speed. It has such a raw power! Like the 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. It has a 611HP with a 48 valve 6.0 liter V-12 engine. Cruising the whole 88Km of the NLEX would be breeze. My sister would definitely drool about it.

On the other hand, while there is this desire for speed, automobile companies have started to realize the importance of having cleaner emissions. They have started going GREEN so to speak and are already making hybrid cars. Like what General Motors did with one model of the Saturn Vue. Too bad they plan to drop the Green line badge.

Sometimes it’s a tough decision to make, choosing between speed and power over slower cars with greener emissions. But who knows, these companies would someday come out with a model that can satisfy both. Just keep reading those reviews.

Weekend Snapshot: Dusk

Last weekend, while driving back to Quezon City coming from Pasig City, my wife and I were awed by the scenic afternoon sky. I just had to park the car and take the snapshot.

Using an exposure time of 1/40 and an aperture setting of f/5.0 at ISO100, There was very minimal processing left to be done with the picture. I just had to resize it and put the usual borders and watermarks.

The King Knight

While looking for my son's rubber shoes, we found one of his favorite toys three(3) years ago. It is a magnetic knight with movable parts. It is fun to play with. That is one thing commendable about the toys today, they are very detailed and realistic.

Seeing the opportunity, I immediately took the latest issue of our company magazine and positioned the knight in front of it. Then viola! Instant background.

Simply Gorgeous

Its Monday morning once again. Almost a third of the household will be rushing off for work starting at around 6-7AM. Before, I thought the competition in terms of first to use and first to finish would be in the bathroom. Since there are times when you have to take a priority number if your family is big.

But do you know what I found out? Its not on the bathroom where the longest preparation time happens. Its in front of the dresser, especially for women (No offense intended, this is pure observation). Facing the collection of suits for work, it will take them at least 10-15 minutes to select which suit to wear. Then comes the hair styling, the make-up and most of the times including the nail polishing. All in all it would take them around 1-2 hours of preparation.

That was for the regular work days. When it comes to dressing up for parties and special occasions, women do love to take their time and look for the best dress to wear. Good thing on-line outfit shopping is already available. Ladies can select clothes as easy as selecting an attire for a SIMS.

The House on the Prairie

While traveling from Tacloban City to Ormoc sometime last April, I chanced upon this house by the road. It was sort of isolated, situated at the middle of grass lands and fruit trees. When I saw the antenna on the roof, it reminded me of the days when we were kids. There were only a handful of TV channels to choose from and whenever the wind blows you see your TV screens register a short haze.

Nowadays, its different. Thanks to the Direct TV, even if your place is in the middle of a desert, you can have hundred of channels to choose from. Be it news, sports or movies, you can watch until you fall asleep and never run out of TV shows to watch. Of course kids would always prefer cartoons.

Unlike the cable TV, when it comes to service, Direct TV Service has an advantage. Not only does it cost less, you can enjoy HD TV quality in all channels.

A directv System will suit any housing like the one above. Instead of tweaking the antenna from left to right, with the satellite dish after pointing it to the right direction, you are almost set to watch TV for life.

I had to make an emergency bank transaction during the weekend. Hurriedly, we drove to the mall together with our nine month old son, but because of the commotion, we forgot to put on his shoes.

So while I was waiting on queue at the bank, my wife, with our son on her arms, went window shopping for a baby stroller at the nearby baby shop.

But just as she was entering the stall, my wife was surprised by the sales lady who immediately greeted her and asked...."Ma'am, are you looking for some shoes, or socks?"

Wittingly, my wife replied with a smile..."No thanks, Just looking." Then she remembered that our sons was bare footed.

Luckily, we saw a new arrival from CROCS in the department store area and bought him a pair. Now we can say that "He is learning to CROC, before he can walk."

The Mail Box

Have you checked your
mailbox lately? When was the last time you received a greeting card that was sent through the post?

Since the onset of emails and mobile SMS, the only items we receive now in our mailboxes are bills for payment and an assortment of flier advertisements. Plus of course, you can always expect the arrival of subscription magazines and delivered packages. Back then you can see people waiting for the arrival of the mail man to see what he has brought home for them. But now, every time you open the mail box, you can almost always get that "DooDad" feeling. Probably because of the recurring bills. Ugh!

The world has shrunk and the speed of communication has become faster than the blink of an eye yet mail boxes still keep their essential functionality. For modern and suburban households, they have become part of the overall architecture. That is why you can still shop for a variety of mail box that will suite your taste and need.

Mail boxes are our time proven portals to the world, regardless of its speed, because it is inherent for people to stay connected.

Hog Convention

The 18th Hog Convention and Trade exhibits was held last April 23-25, 2009 at the World Trade Center - Manila in Pasay City. It is an annual affair attended by more than 48 hog raisers association all over the Philippines where the different companies that cater to the industry showcase their latest products and services.

Each company spends a sizable amount each year just to make their exhibit more attractive. This is common practice in trade show exhibits where advertising companies make a killing. Well it is an investment of course. At least if you let the advertisers conceptualize and make the presentation, the exhibitor no longer has to worry what table covers to use at the booth. They would just need to approve that their table top display conveys the right message.

But this year, although the Hog convention went well in general, the booth presentations were not as extravagant as before. Some companies did not even put up a booth. Maybe because of the financial situation we are all in. The good thing is that people still strive to make the connection no matter how life can be. Besides at the end of the day, its the value of what a company can deliver on a day to day basis that counts rather than a yearly exhibit that is all for a show.

A New Lens to Connect

As a hobbyist, my wife & I have both enjoyed the digital pictures we've taken using our Canon EOS 450D(In the US, it is equivalent to the Canon EOS Rebel XSi) that we bought as a kit(lens included: Canon EF-S 18-55mm). Then, just a few weeks ago we upgraded the lens to Canon EF-S 18-200 mm F3.5-5.6IS. The satisfaction was really invigorating. Its a testimonial that I've posted in my Acobay account.

Speaking of Acobay, its a new social network site where you can share your stuffs and get connected with other people who share the same interest. Its still in the beta release as of now and the circle is growing bigger.

In life, it pays to know that you are connected. Whether it be a network of pet lovers or even book network, the common treads and experience will make you feel related.

Now for the camera enthusiast like me and my wife, lets share and live the passion.

Earth Day 2009

Last April 22, in commemoration for the Earth Day, our company held a short program and planted trees around our plant. We envisioned a continuance of our 2008 Earth Day goals and build up on the momentum that it has created. That for our company, we share the movement in 100 locations, 30 countries worldwide.

In spite of all the economic turmoil that we are facing today, one thing is certain. If each one of us contribute in any small way for preserving our planet earth, the glimmer of hope will not die.

We can create our future. Let us start by preserving Mother Earth.

Weekend Snapshot: First & Last Full Moon

Last night was the Full Moon. You can consider it as the first full moon for 2009 and for the Chinese,it is the last full moon before their new year on the 26th.

I do not know if there is any relation with the moon assuming its fullness, but last Saturday when we brought our 4 month old son for his scheduled shots to his pediatrician, the doctor received numerous calls of babies having diarrhea. That prompted her to change my son's vaccination schedule and gave him a booster shot against rotavirus instead.

Then yesterday morning, our household helper fell ill and slept almost the whole day. Then on the same evening, I had some stomach upset. Coincidence? Most probably.

Studies have failed to substantiate any relationship of illness, lunacy or birthrates to full moons. But one thing is certain, our days and nights go around in a pattern. A cycle that can be pieced together to spell out LIFE. The beauty here comes from the choice of pieces that we pick. Although there can be no turning back,it can always be a full life well lived.

Creating Back-up Files

As part of the company's information protection (IP) program, we are required to back up our files. This is especially true with our electronic files. When I was in Korea last September, our sister business unit have a warning sign posted on their walls as a reminder.

Electronic file management differs somehow with manual files. It makes use of extension files that classifies the specific type of software that that file was created. For example, a presentation file is created and saved with a File Extension PPS. PPS stands for PowerPoint Slide Show.

Then, there are times when you run a certain program that temporary files are created. Usually, you can identify these temporary files because of their File Extension TMP. However, be very careful when clicking such kind of files, especially if it comes as an attachment in an email. It can contain a computer virus.

Depending on your computer operating system (OS), different file extensions are used. But usually it runs a three (3) letter suffix that is separated with a dot. It is not always the case of course. Take for example the File Extension TORRENT which represents a Peer-to-peer (P2P)computer link.

There are a variety of file extensions. All of which function for easier filing, usage and retrieval. The thing is on properly backing them up and saving them on a recognizable format. As the sign says: "Back them up"

Weekend Snapshot: At Holidays End

The holidays are over. Its time to get back to the daily routine and the pile of work to be done. Just like in every feast, after all the sumptuous meals and bubbly wines were shared and dined, they leave a full sink pile of pans and dishes to be washed.

This is the picture after our "Media Noche". I made chicken macaroni salad with lots of ham, cheese and bacon. Maybe next time I can share the recipe.

The sink was a heap full to look at. Procrastination attacks were tremendous. But when I dove in and opened the faucet, our sink was again gleaming after 30 minutes. It felt very satisfying.

The same is my inspiration in meeting today's task list. Dive in and make things happen.

The New Year Bang!

All around the globe, we celebrate the coming of the new year in a festive fashion. Though we might have a different way and reason of welcoming the new year, it usually goes with a BANG!

For some it commemorates the achievements for the year that was. For others, it denotes a fresh start. A time of renewal and setting of new goals. But whether we hit those targets or miss them miserably, only one thing is for sure....Life will go on. After 365 days, we will come to hear another BANG! But I hope its nothing suicidal of course. LOL!

It will all depend on how we choose to live that life. That will determine how meaningful that next "BANG!" will be for each of us.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

For most of us, the holiday season is the time when family members get together and celebrate the occasion with a feast. But for more than a million Filipino Overseas Contract Workers (OFW), this year will be another season away from their love ones. They would have to contend themselves with a phone call or webcast just to get in touch. Thanks to modern technology.

Speaking of phones, did you know that there are now land line phone units that is equipped with spy-bugs? They are called Phone-007. They can record phone conversations in progress and even ambient noises with in the phones range.

I was also surprised when I learned about such phones. They can be hooked to an internet connection and you can listen to conversations by dialing a local Phone-007 access code. That would be eavesdropping in the truest sense of the word. In addition, you can even log-in to my.PurpleGoods.com to access all previous recordings made.

As I always say about technology, they are here to improve our way of life. Its a choice how we use such technology. Our individual intentions and motives will dictate how we dispense of them...good or bad.

Well, its the start of another year. We can always change for the better. And for our OFW's, yes they are lonely, but who knows, they just might have sent home a Phone-007 just to stay connected. (",)

Delivering on Commitments

After opening a new plant in the northern part of Mindanao (Southern part of the Philippines), the immediate concern that our operation experienced was the issue on logistics. Freight cost are high inspite of the continuous roll-back of fuel prices. Apparently the distance and the terrain play a major obstacle.

Cagayan de Oro City is around 300KM (186 Miles) away for Davao City and some 450KM (280 Miles) for General Santos City (Manny Pacquio's home town) travelling south. It would take a 10-wheeler truck 2-3 days to complete a round trip. Considering the wear and tear of the truck including tires, fuel consumption, and driver's fee, Most of the truckers are charging a considerable sum of money.

Nonetheless, since our commitment to our customers is to deliver their requirement on time, we have to carry the freight burden. In any kind of business, delivering to what has been committed is foundational to building trust and the first step for a repeat sale. Nothing can prosper if such commitments are violated.

Almost for the whole month of December, my team and I hurdled the hick-ups of a start up operation. There were a lot of sleepless nights and internal challenges. But in the end, by putting the customers first, everything went fairly well.

All thanks to the relentless efforts of an engaged team.

I was trying to relate the the morning dew to a symbolic gesture of a fresh start. What ever happened in the yester of day is showered off and refreshed with each droplet of dew in the morning.

Then I stumbled upon this very nice poem:

Building Foundation

What makes a building withstand the toughest storm?

It must be built on a solid foundation. The structural strength of every material used should pass an international quality standard for safety, durability and tensil strength. Most prefabricated buildings are set to meet these standards. They have gone through extensive R&D and applied technology.

A person's character can be likened to commercial steel buildings. If the foundation and quality of building materials used are strong, the person's character will also be rock solid. Foundation such as integrity, honesty, respect, these are the values that will provide the tenacity of one's personhood.

If the steel buildings are haphazardly made, where the engineers cut corners and favor economics over quality, it might last a year or two. But give it some continuous strain and in time it will crumble. Just as superficial traits that a person of weak character shows. He might fake it for a while, but when faced with life's challenges, his true nature will come out.

But unlike a building, a person can choose to strengthen and make himself better. The building will rely only to the moldings of his creator. Unlike a building, the person can change. He always has a choice...he only needs to make it.

This is my first entry to Carmi's Thematic Photographic series. For this week, the theme is SWEET. But instead of posting something sugar coated food that we normally eat, I thought it would be better to go on the more natural side of sweetness.

Nectar is the natural food of bees and hummingbirds. The bees use them to make honey. Honey that we harness and use for our pancakes and pastries.

Maybe we too should indulge in some natural sweeteners, especially during these holidays, so we can share some authentic sweetness for each other...that is coming from the heart.

Financing College Education

Just yesterday, my colleague told me that he was trying to sell his pick-up truck for 8 grand(USD). I joked with a chuckle, asking why the rush, was it tuition time again? Surprisingly he nodded in confirmation. The university where his daughter was taking college has trimestral period.

I remember when we were back in college. Some of my classmates, coming from the provinces, have to avail of student loans just to enroll or at times just to make both ends of their allowance meet.

Sometimes its difficult being a student, although majority of us were lucky to be well provided for. There are some who have to find work or, as I've mentioned, furnish a student loan to finance their education.

Although, looking at their predicament in another light, there is an advantage for them experiencing that. They learn early on how to value money and prioritize their spending. Especially nowadays where that the cost of college education is too high even in state universities. Taking up a student loan can be an early training for the future executives and entrepreneurs on how to handle money.

As we used to call it in college, its education beyond the four corners of the classroom.

Are you being tracked?

Twice in a row, I heard about GPS tracking today. First with the movie "Wild Hogs" when they threw away their GPS equipped phones for an adventure filled bike ride across America. Then, the second in the movie "DaVinci Code", where Professor Langdon was bugged by a GPS tracking dot by the French Agents to track his movement.

GPS tracking or better known as Global Positioning System is becoming a common technology nowadays. It used to be available only for military use but now civilians too can take advantage of its usefulness. If you have a GPS receiver, triangulating your position anywhere in the world, using around 24-32 mid altitude satellites around the globe, can be available within seconds. The only places where it can have a harder time locating you would be if you are driving through a tunnel, or even when you are driving in between high rise buildings. The signals gets choppy.

With the GPS tracking being available in the market (its a common feature now of the 3G mobile phones), depending on how you use it, it can be good or it can be bad. Good for finding location, or tracking down your cargo. But if you use it to spy on your spouse or employee...somehow it can breed distrust.

Technology should be used to make our lives better...always depending on how we make use of technology.

The last time I was in South Korea, I snapped a picture of this post box. In the Philippines, this is not a common site. Whenever, we have to send a letter or parcel for shipment, it would be sent through the post office. But since the birth of email, I can't remember the last time I visited a post office.

Back at work, for communicating with our customers, we make use of newsletters and send them by direct mail. Still, the way we have sent them was through a contracted courier which handles the shipment faster than snail mail. For a time we saw that process effective. Just like the pair of shoes that was left in front of the door step, that is how I see how my blog has been for the last twelve (12) days. Parked and left alone.

I could easily justify that my schedules did not permit me to upload. Besides, WI-FI connection has also been a challenge the last few days in the field. But sometimes, when the moment of choice comes, you need to do what is more important. No excuses. Just priorities.

Ambiance added

From the coffee shop at the mall, I saw this amber looking lighting fixture hanging on the wall. It radiates a warm light highlighted by the broken glass effect on the lighting glass. You could say that it really helped in providing the ambiance.

Most of us love to lounge at coffee shops to surf and sip our favorite coffee blend. But generally (this is only my opinion), what attracts us and make us stay at those coffee shops is because of the ambiance. How cozy and relaxing it feels while sipping a hot cup of coffee...and this aura is partly generated by the impact of the lighting. Some even have special fine art lamps that warms up the entire atmosphere.

Just like in this shop, with this hinkley light fixtures type of lamp. I guess it makes the higher cost of coffee from this shops more affordable.

Looking for... a Bike?

One time I was caught in traffic while riding a taxi cab in Cebu City when I chance upon the one-eyed graffiti on a school yard wall. Hurriedly I took my camera to snap a picture and as I pressed the shutter, this biker just sped out of nowhere. What luck! the bike's blur added to the total effect.

Speaking of bikes, did you know that the most efficient machine on earth in terms of weight transported over distance for energy expended is a human on a bicycle (www.bikewebsite.com.). It can even be considered as one of the solutions for our energy crisis situation. Imagine, no petrol fuel required, you can get to where you want without being bothered by traffic, you'll get a very good exercise, and to top it all up, its environment friendly.

Of course, it can not replace the cars and mass transport for long distance travels, but for city or town mobility, the bike is a great alternative.

I remember my first bike. It was an easy rider with foot brakes. It even has a ringer bell attached to the handles. Then during high school, I saved my allowance in order to assemble my own BMX. Given a chance if ever I'll have another bike today, I guess it will be a mountain bike. Although I'd prefer to assemble it by myself again, but for practical reasons, a lot of good choices are readily available off the racks even on-line.

Honing the Potential

One early Sunday morning,after hearing about the cat that was stalking a chicken at our neighbor's roof, my son grabbed our Canon S3IS to take zoomed-in picture. Unfortunately, the chicken flew away and left him only a grooming cat to shoot on.

He is only 9 years old and it seems he has already caught on our passion for photography. As many used to say: "Start them early.."

Its amazing how our younger generations of today are assimilating technology and applying them almost instantly. Sometimes, they don't even have to read the manual to operate new electronic toys and gadgets.

Having that is already a plus for these kids. Now they just need to be nurtured and guided to bring out their fullest potential.

From Seoul to Busan: A Korean Adventure

It took me a while to get back into blogging. How are you? Or should I say "Sugoha shipmida!...That's the written form of HELLO in Korean!

Yup, I've been to South Korea for a week long exposure two weeks ago. It took me some time to sort out over than 800 pictures that I snapped. I stayed two days in Seoul(Flying in thru Inchon) then I flew south to Busan where I spent the remainder of the week traveling the Gyeongsang province in Hapcheon County, Hamyang County, Jinju City and the subdivision of Haeundae east of Busan.

The Korean people are very kind and warm. You could always expect to receive a cup of coffee or hot tea upon your visit to their homes. I first thought of them as very formal people, based from the Korean drama series shown in our local TV networks. It was a big AHA! for me. They were formal, yes, only in the sense of showing respect for others and especially to their seniors.

I was blessed with a very good guide and "Sabo" (Teacher) during my stay in Busan. He took care care of everything I needed. His name is Kwak Jun Ho, or you can also call him Shine. He lives in Kimhae city, around 25KM north of Busan, with his wife Kim Yeon Suk and their 2 year old daughter Kwak, Kyu Lim.

Shine even taught me how to speak a little Korean, like how to say thank you after being offered coffee: "Coffee jo syu suh Khamsahamnida."

Learning about Korea, its people and their culture is very interesting. Their history goes a long way back. Its really quite an experience.

An Old Favorite Revisited

After staying at home for almost a week on a paternity leave, I had a chance to play an old time favorite PC game The SIMS2 Deluxe. This one is an expanded version of the original The SIMS2 plus Nightlife expansion pack. Actually, since we have purchased the PC game, I have already expanded it with Open for Business and The SIMS 2 Pets. We were supposed to upgrade further with Sims2 University but when I got hooked up into blogging, I found a more rewarding stress reliever.

Yes, before I started blogging, playing The Sims has been some what of a therapy for me. I enjoyed designing and building the houses, arranging the Living Room Furniture, landscaping the yard and creating Sims characters.

With the expansion packs, especially the Sims2 Pets, not only did the game play expanded but also the choices of chic items in the buy and build mode. Take for example the snapshot above, it use to have formal chairs and living room set from the original version. It used to be the only logical choice to put since they were the only items that give maximum comfort levels for the sims. But with new expansion packs, when you go into the buy mode, its as if you go into a Living room Furniture Store, just select from the chic and stylish items. The only thing missing would be the Ottomans if you really want to complete the picture. This are all possible of course if you have the simoleons to buy them with.

It was fun playing the SIMS again. But not as fun as playing with my sons.

Managing Both Ends

Still consuming my paternity leave, I get to help my wife in taking care of our new baby. You can call it a true division of labor. . . While she handles all the breast feeding from one end, I take charge of the other end. And as many times he suckles in a day is almost the same number of times he discharges.

My wife even got worried at first since it seems so frequent. But come to think of it, its only physiologically normal, like passing a series of cotton balls in a 1 meter (3.39 ft.) tube pipe. At first you continue to put in the cotton balls until the pipe fills. Then as you continue, the first ball you put it comes out of the other end and will continue to come out as long you put a cotton ball in the first end.

We have already consumed more than three (3) dozen diapers for my baby's first week. You can just imagine the number of poop jokes I started to collect. Even comparing how messy it can become if left standing for some time. Colostomy bags would be a lot cleaner. Lol!

Speaking of colostomy bags, have you seen how it works? I have a colleague that was installed with one after being diagnosed with colon cancer. The affected part of his large intestine was removed and the cut portion was redirected to a stoma(opening) made at the side of his abdomen. His poop now discharges and collected to the colostomy bag. The bag is replaceable after every discharge.

Managing poop using diapers works pretty much the same. Both are disposable and use topical ointment for skin care. But for sure working with diapers would be a lot bearable to the nose.

Motivation to a Great Health

Strider is a father again. My first born now has a brother. A healthy 5.0 lbs, 10 oz baby who my wife's Ob-Gyne called "Bilis"(Fast). Because he was out before the doctor has finished scrubbing.

As I shoot this picture, I pondered..."I am a proud father at 39". Of course, who wouldn't be. Not only because of my youngest is again a boy, but it proves that my first one was not just because of chance and I still don't require the use of Cialis. lol!

But seriously, at 39 my attention dawned on my health. I had been a smoker for 20 years or more, and if I would want to see my sons become fathers themselves, I must really consider quitting smoking.

Studies from the National Population Health Survey have shown that for every 100 smokers age 45 years old, 90 will survive until the age of 65. But only 30 will survive beyond 80.

If I quit now, I still might have a chance to save time. As the saying goes "Health is Wealth". If I invest a little everyday on my health, someday we can reap the rewards of time.

Its all good news that my son was born normally last September 4, 2008 and my wife is now recovering very well. We've been discharged from the hospital with a sigh of relief. But are you in for a little secret?

Why have we insisted to stick with the old gizzers?

Now my data is gone & I never can be acquitted.

From Cisco to HP, they made telecommunications happy,
The world has shrunk dearly and the network has grown immensely.
Yet as fast as the web grows, so does many hackers grossly upload,
Spamming worms and virus like wolves in sheep's clothes.

So now my LAN, swallow the bitter pill we must,

While reviewing my set of pictures from the Minneapolis trip I chanced upon this picture again. I have used this photo before in my MBA widget as symbolic way of showing the connectivity through the internet. Just like my feedjit at the side bar. I can see where from the world do my visitors come from.

The internet has truly flattened the world. The only thing limiting us from connecting real time is the particular time zones we are in. Well, we could actually drop at each others sites and exchange comments in a matter of minutes. But if we are located on the opposite side of the globe, either one of us would definitely be having a big set of eye bags in the morning. lol!

My other blog, MBA On-Line was intended to be a learning platform about the blogosphere and about leadership development. Although it has taken me almost a month already in preparing the blog's outline. It is intended to be a step by step blog development from the basic frameworks to hopefully become even a web hosting tutorial site in the future. For almost the whole of August, I had been doing research and collecting tutorial materials and web hosting articles for the blog. I even bought a book about multimedia for the web which I intend to use as resource material.

Preparation phase is done. Now comes the implementation. I just wish that the blog earns its ratings and reviews well by contributing to the betterment of our being. As we connect with each other around the world, it increases our awareness and understanding how we all can make a difference and help change this world for the better.

Summer in September

September is just around the corner. At this time of the year the weather is just great in the mid-west, nearing the end of summer. In Minneapolis, our company holds the President's forum annually around this months, where the representatives from 27 countries across the globe are invited to fly over to be recognized for their achievements and contribution to their respective business units.

Last September 2006, I was fortunate to be one of the Philippine delegation to attend the forum. We had the chance to meet not only the senior leadership team but also our counterparts from other locations. A fruitful venue to exchange ideas and learn from their experiences. That year, it was Vietnam who got the Business of the Year Award.

It was a full 3 day event that was very well organized and executed. There were spectacular presentations and trade show exhibits. All the different brand segments have their own booths, custom made for the occasion. The booths were lined inside the perimeter of the wide trade hall. Brochures, books and souvenir items were a plentiful table top display. There were even games and raffle draws. Really incredible!

The trade hall was also delightfully colorful,dressed with the different flags of the represented countries. Then at the center were coffee shop tables complete with table covers where colleagues lounge after touring the show.

They say your stay in Minneapolis wouldn't be complete if you haven't tasted the Famous Dave's baby-back ribs. So after the convention, our team decided to share a couple of beers while savoring the sumptuous meal...and mind you, their servings were really big.

Then before we all flew back home, we dropped by the highly acclaimed Mall of America to check-out the items on sale. Funny, but we ended up buying items at Victoria's Secret.

That September in 2006 was a very memorable & humbling experience indeed. Knowing that you are only part of a very big whole. A speck in the universe of diversity yet your contribution is celebrated by everybody.

Of Anxiety, Expectation & Faith

With my wife expecting the arrival of our new son in the next few weeks, I can not help but to pray that they both surpass the ordeal safely. Hoping that our second child will also be born normal.

As the full term is nearing, both excitement and anxiety fills every gap of our conscious mind. It is somewhat stressful. Last night, I succumbed to tonsillitis. A combined effect of stress and erratic weather. It came quite a surprise though, since I haven't been bothered by tonsillitis for sometime now. It just bothered me since I had a history of rheumatic fever in my childhood due to frequent battles with tonsillitis, and this has led me to wonder on the possibilities whether my expected son could inherit such predisposition.

So I did some web searching. One of the most striking relationships I found that could have a congenital effect on newborn was about mitral valve defects.

The mitral valve , a.k.a. bicuspid valve, is a dual flap tissue inside the heart. It lies between the left atrium and the left ventricle which functions as a regulatory measure preventing the back-flow of blood from the ventricle to the atrium. In the normal cardiac cycle, once the oxygen filled blood from the lungs enters the atrium, the mitral valve relaxes allowing it to pass through the left ventricle for distribution to the other parts of the body via the aorta. At the same time that the ventricles contract, the valve shuts close preventing any back flow. However, if the mitral valve is defective, a portion of the oxygenated blood enters back to the atrium, reducing the amount of blood that will be distributed to the entire body. It produces a murmur sound that can be heard by auscultation.

Several factors can cause such malfunction and one reason can be associated to rheumatic heart disease. If left unchecked, the condition can be fatal. Good thing, modern medicine has come up with ways to do mitral valve repair. Several institutions have specialized in treating the condition with high percentage of safety and success. They can either do mitral valve surgery or altogether do mitral valve replacement.

Knowing this, it comes as source of relief. Plus of course, staying in faith that my expected son would be free any congenital anomaly. At least, if ever he would be contracting tonsillitis later on, it would be easier to prevent and treat.

Making a Better Place for the Next Generation

We have a new member of the family expected to arrive in the next two weeks. So far, preparations are underway. We have upgraded the bedroom. Now the next challenge will be the nursery and the living room.

We were thinking of letting go of old items and look for Modern Furniture which could be more ergonomic. But the idea of holding a garage sale to dispose the old ones is not very appealing. I guess, we have to do a lot of rearranging and furniture donations to make for room.

As I said, ergonomics is the name of the game. A simple Modern Furniture that could be stylish yet space saving fits very well in a small living room. A few chairs would have to go to give room for the collapsable crib.

For the nursery, ideally it should be another room by itself. But having only two bedrooms in the house, it would have to fit in also with the Master's Bed room. A combination of Old and Modern Furniture will have to work together to give the suitable ambiance.

It is really great how our creativity can work when we are expecting a new life coming on our way. Besides, I believe that it lies on our responsibility to create a better world for the future of our next generation.

Of late, I had been receiving SMS phone messages from several banks offering salary loans from PhP30,000 (US$667) - PhP1,000,000(US$22,222) at 1.39% interest per month. Then when you ask them how they got my number, they say it was randomly selected.

Are these banks that desperate now to get credit? What happened to the good old customer assessment and credit evaluation, where they use to offer Credit Repair and restructuring?

Well, maybe these banks are just more aggressive in providing personal loans compared to home or auto-loans. For sure, with the bigger amount of money at stake with the home or auto loans, they will definitely be more selective. With personal loans, they would only ask for your last months payslip to get approval. Where with home loans your historical credit records will be scrutinized. That is, if you have a bad record in the past and haven't had a Bad Credit Repair, you would definitely have a harder time getting a loan.

I have some friends who have actually gone though enormous lengths just to get their home loan restructured and Repair Credit status. It made life easier for them. After the that they were able to sleep better with the re-structured loan. Some even thought to apply for another loan once again. Thanks to the Credit Repair Services offered by companies on-line.

For me, I take caution before getting into such credits. That personal loan offer looks attractive. But until I see a definite use for such a credit, one that would be productive enough to repay for that loan, I find it non-beneficial to my net worth.

To Swipe or Not to Swipe

Last night, I was trying to book an emergency airport to airport cargo transport for a client. It was many times more expensive than our usual shipment by sea and the hard part was that we have to pay on the spot. Then, for the nth time that it happened to me, my cash came short to cover the bill. Fortunately, I have my handy credit cards that helped me settle all the dues (...as if they were saying Mighty Mouse' famous line.."Here I come to save the day!").

Its good to have credit cards as long as you know how to use them and have the will power to resist the temptation of whimsical buying. I learned that lesson the hard way long ago. Imagine, even when I had a low interest credit card back then, just because I chose to leave a balance every month and pay only the minimum, it practically ate up my monthly salary. There were even times that I missed the payment due dates because of lack of funds only to receive a hostile reminder from my creditor. If not from family support, I wouldn't have been able to pull myself out of that debt. We were so thankful for them.

That was why, my wife & I lived on cash for a time. It was only after I landed on another job and a few years of healing did we consider applying again for credit cards. Although we use the pre-paid debit cards instead to make cashless transactions especially for groceries.

Then at work, when I was given a new regional assignment some four months ago, I requested to avail of our corporate business credit cards. It was a practical alternative to our usual revolving fund. Since most of the time I am away from office for weeks, I no longer worry about delayed reimbursements and revolving funds running dry. Like what happened last night. If I didn't have my credit card with me, I couldn't have shipped my stocks and most probably would have to deal with an irate client today.

There are a lot of credit card providers to choose from in the market. You can actually compare their benefits. But the thing to remember when using credit cards, is to use them only when necessary, take advantage of their cut-off periods to maximize the credit term and as much as possible, NEVER LEAVE AN OUTSTANDING BALANCE UNPAID.

The Christmas Gift

Last last Christmas, I gave an Apple iPod Nano 4GB as a present for my wife. She was surprised. She never thought I would actually buy her one since it was our niece who was really giving out hints of wanting one. Fortunately, I chanced upon one store in Bacolod City that sells iPods at a discount, around $20 less from the malls in Metro Manila.

My wife was very grateful of course. But more than happy was my 9 year old son who filled up the iPod with Naruto songs. The fact that the iPod Nano that I bought was fuscha in color doesn't seem to bother him at all. You'll know if he is listening to his favorite songs when he starts nodding his head and stomping his feet as he hums along with the music.

That started us into considering of buying him his own iPod Nano. We eventually searched the online stores to see whats the latest in the market and study the reviews. So far its the iPod Nano 8GB that stands out, next to the iPhone. It has 8GB of flash memory that can store up to 2000 4 minute songs which is equivalent to 8 hours of video. It also has a 2-inch LCD screen with 320x240 pixel that gives better viewing experience. Plus, it can store versatile file format of data, MP3 and video. A very chic & versatile feature for such a small device.

Probably its that versatility that makes the iPod click especially with the current genre. An all-in-one gadget that is very efficient and easy to use. It's appeal actually spans across different age groups. That is why my wife would love to get her iPod back.

Well, kudos for the iPod Nano's developers. We could be buying one again for this coming Christmas.

Conquering Mt. Pinatubo # 5 (Following the Leader)

Up to the pass, at the foot of Mt. Pinatubo, the group of 16 men and a lady started their trek up the mountain. Supplied with water, sandwiches and some chocolates, they enthusiastically lined up to follow the trail. They were led by a team leader, aided by the local tour guide. He paced his way at different levels overseeing the rest of the group.

At the start, the group was all energy. Everybody was jolly walking in big strides. You can hear a burst of jokes erupting followed by a thunder of laughter. Until the first casualty came just a few kilometers of trek. A group member had suffered from cramps. The word was passed and the line went on a halt. Immediately the team leader was there and comforted the suffering member.

More jokes were thrown the group teasing the suffering member, as the designated first aid giver attended to his aching leg. Some of the team were considering to carry him up. But after a few minutes of rest and leg massage. He was back on his feet.

Moving on, they continued the climb. Stopping only to catch breath and to regroup. As the team leader prods them on, motivating all to give their best. A shout and chant of "Lets Get it On!" recharges the team as they rushed towards the peak.

After hours of trekking and boulder hopping, feet drenched in sulfur water, one by one, the team reached the peak and saw the beauty of Mt. Pinatubo's crater. Shouting as they ran up the last remaining steps, as if a second wind has sailed, everyone has finished the course. When all were accounted, the leader gave a smile of content. Happy for all for achieving a common goal.

Conquering Mt. Pinatubo # 4 (Charting the Course)

Enroute to the drop-off point going to Mt. Pinatubo, the 4x4 jeeps tread across the lahar at full speed. Water splashed as the jeeps crossed the river one by one. It was one roller coaster ride.

Imagining how many times the drivers of these 4x4 have navigated through this course, it made the ride reassuring. A first time driver would surely run this course with greater caution. For these drivers, beyond the thrills and excitement of each adventure, every successful trip only boosts their confidence to ride the tide.

Afterwards, when the group discussed about the experience, one colleague pointed out a very good insight he had. When the jeeps ran out of road, it went straight through the rivers and treaded the circumstances. Just like in business, at times situation happen when the usual solutions will no longer work. It would call for innovations and courage to create the road to success.

Conquering Mt. Pinatubo # 3 (Appreciating Simplicity)

After Mt. Pinatubo's erruption in 1991, there was an estimated 1000 square kilometers of prime agricultural lands that were put at risk because of the subsequent lahar flows. Every time the rainy season came, the surrounding areas of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampaga always had to face the dangerous lahar floods.

Mt. Pinatbo spued 6.83 cubic kilometer of pyroclastic flows in 1991. The erruption of hot ash was about 200 meters thick*. After 15 years, it left a vast gray desert.

The span of the lahar was enormous. During the long bumpy 4x4 jeep ride to the drop-off point, the group was drawn to an awe to see how the local folks thrived in that lahar devasted area. Seeing a horserider who was going to who knows where, the group started to wonder how would they fare if they lived in his condition. Most of them couldn't bear the thought of having no access to Direct TV to watch their favorite movies. Some said they can't stand the isolation. While others can't imagine how silent the nights would be.

For sure those local folks have their fair share of exposure to the modern world, directtv and all. Even though everyday life could ba a little tougher. Nonetheless, its definitely much simpler.

No Monday morning rush to work just to get caught in a jungle of traffic. Their blood pressures probably don't spike up that often. And most probably, they don't have that much credit card bills to pay.

A simple life that can be enjoyed with peace and tranquility. Thats a kind of thing many would agree to trade for a day or two. Yet there are a few who can live in the middle of anywhere...as long as they have a DSLR, laptop with high speed internet connection and of course, what would better complete the picture than also having directv .

Now, that's simplicity.

Conquering Mt. Pinatubo - #2 (Doing the Process)

On July 20, 2006 a group of highly spirited men and a lady began an early day to climb Mt. Pinatubo. They gathered at the parking area Holiday Inn Resort in Clark Field, Pampanga.

Four sturdy 4x4 jeepneys lined up, all with heavy duty wheel base and roll bars. The head driver told the group that they should be hitting the road by 6:00AM. When the group members have all checked in and after some picture taking...at exactly 6:00AM, they were off.

The road trip was long going to Capas, Tarlac. Because aside from the traffic, the jeeps were more cut for off-road travel. The maximum speed gained never passed 60KPH. It really ate up time. But there was nothing that the group could do but to endure the bumps and the wait. It was an inevitable part of the process.

The real thrill began when the jeeps ran out of roads...

Conquering Mt. Pinatubo - #1 (Facing the Challenge)

After the big eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in June of 1991, it became a famous tourist attraction for mountain climbers and nature lovers.

The feat involves a two (2) hour ride on a 4x4 jeep from Clark Field in Pampanga up to the foot of the Mt. Pinatubo via Capas, Tarlac. Then another two (2) hours of trekking up to the crater of the volcano.

Last July 2006, our team leader organized a climb to commemorate our fiscal year kick-off (Our Fiscal Year cycles from June-May). Part of the objectives were to mentally prepare our team for the challenging goal that year. Another was to build the team camaraderie, especially that time, where we had a group of visiting colleagues from Vietnam that joined us.

Big goals are truly like mountains. When you are at the bottom, it would either scare you of its enormity or challenge you to go on and conquer it's summit. It would take a great deal of courage and conviction to stay the course. The accomplishment of such goal primarily relies on the decision to go. As with the Japanese Proverb that says: "The journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step".

Luckily for our group, we all stood and faced the challenge. We decided to go. Along the way, our battle cry was forged as we shouted together....LET'S GET IT ON!

Nostalgic Moments

Together with the picture from my previous post, I stumbled upon this. A picture of Inay & Itay (Mom & Dad) when my son celebrated his 6th birthday in Tagaytay City.

47 years ago, Inay & Itay had their honeymoon in Taal Vista Lodge. We even thought of surprising them with another honeymoon treat for their anniversary. Unfortunately, Itay passed away exactly a year ago today.

We struggled over the loss, most especially Inay. It took her several months before she got back to her regular community work for our church... which was only understandable of course. Imagine, after their retirement, they have practically spent everyday together for the last 20 years. Tell me about sharing a lifetime together.

What's wonderful about their relationship was the way they have grown to know and understand each other. They can communicate without uttering a word. Still at times, they have misunderstandings...but nothing that love couldn't forgive.

Now that Itay is gone, we can only look back to those shared memories...and what's most memorable about his death anniversary is that it will always happen on my birthday. lol!

An Afternoon Trek at the Park

This picture was taken a few years back. My sister in law visited us for a vacation and we brought them to the La Mesa Ecopark in Quezon City.

It was a wonderful break. We got to spend time with family and at same time unwind from the daily pressures of work.

We all need a break in order for our systems to revitalize. Its a natural law of life. One day in a week was the recommendation, as God did after the six days of creation. Yet somehow we tend to ignore it's importance because of our busy schedules.

I myself am guilty of it.

Probably it was meant to be that I have unearthed this picture. Not only do I get a nice material to post... I also got the chance to redeem the precious time.

What a blessing for you and me. HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

Heavy clouds covered the sky. Rain poured heavily that afternoon. I wondered how closely the Air Traffic Controllers were monitoring their radars and weather indicators.

Times like this is like when market situations are difficult in business. This is when we give a sharper look on indicators. Especially now that all inputs are sky rocketting while markets are dwindling, the bottom line is forever challenged. But as long as the data is acurate, a good forecast can be made. The course can be plotted on how the business can soar.

A Glimpse of the Horizon

During one of my trips to Cagayan de Oro City from Manila, the pilot struggled to pass a cloud layer. We experienced jolts of air pockets and turbulence, but when we breached through, the flight was again stable. Upon reaching the designated altitude, a beautiful view of the horizon was visible.

Its a wonderful view being sandwiched between the clouds. It gives another perpective. Such is the transformation we get when we experience life situations, after all the trouble and the struggles, we tend to grow and see things in a different plane.

As part of our team building activity, our group went to ZOObic Safari after taking the survival trek at Subic Bay's JEST Camp. One of the main attractions was called the "Tiger Safari" where you'll visit an enclosed area on a jeep where tigers are free roaming in their natural habitat. We bought some chickens to draw the tiger's attention.

Did you know that Tigers consume about 10kg (22lbs.) of chicken in a day. Such fierce creatures. Just look at those eyes. 100% focussed and they are so relentless until they get what they want...

...And so can we if we go for our goals with such intensity.

Tilted Reflections

This shot is not my original composition. Maiylah did it first with her S3IS (She was too kind to lend me her 450D. lol!) Anyway, what caught my attention from this angle was how the clouds' reflection tilted from the view of the car window.

Sometimes, the same situation happens when we do reflect on things. Especially when our thoughts are taunted by a stimulating idea. Afterwards, we tend to see things in a different light and viola...a new paradigm is created.

Reflection helps us refocus our energy. Learning from the paths that we have traveled and preparing ourselves for the continuation of the journeys that we have chosen.

Lets Share a Little Prayer once Again

I am putting up the Praying Hands back on post. This time its for Makoy.

He was fortunate enough to go to Singapore for employment. However, during his recent pre-employment medical exam, the Doctors saw something odd from his chest X-ray. He fears that if he is found positive for Tuberculosis (TB), he would be endagering the people he is living with in Singapore, not to mention missing the opportunity to land a job. We hope and pray that it is not TB.

Makoy has been a regular Entrecard dropper for most of our sites. He needs our prayers right now...

...and every little prayer that we share counts.

The Lonely Fern

The world has witnessed another davastating loss of lives and properties from the wrath of typhoon Frank (international codename:Fensheng). It ravaged the several provinces in the Philippines causing massive floods and mud slides particularly in the island of Panay. An estimatated damage to infrastructure and agriculture was about PhP 5.5 billion (US$ 122.5MM).
Yesterday, I travelled to Iloilo City, one of the major cities in Panay island. It has been a week since the storm. Traces of the typhoon's damage were still evident.
But life has slowly started to move on.

Like the fern that grows on a broken branch...

...No matter how difficult the living condition can be, as long as there is a single root that attaches to the tree, there is hope for the lonely fern. It will survive...
...and so shall we.

I have always admired landscape artists...how they combine different sorts of plants, pots, rocks and logs together and create an appealing environment. They can blend the beauty of numerous plants accordingly to make one statement without loosing the individual radiance of each plant.

These plants are like people. Each one us have our own unique being. Just imagine what a landscape we can create, if we blend all our talents together...

Just a few of the rewards I got from seizing the Baguio sunset. The building below is part of Hotel Elizabeth.
Was trying to combine the effect of the lamp glow and the golden background

This one, on the other hand, is another experiment in taking silhouette shots

What I found out is that, there is a need for firmer hands. Because of the subdued lighting, the shutter stays open longer using the normal aperture value setting at ISO-200. Otherwise, the resulting pictures will be blurred. It would have been better if I used a tripod.

During our conference in Baguio City, we stayed at Hotel Elizabeth. It is a very cozy hotel with very good landscaped gardens. During one late afternoon, while we were resting in our room, I saw the beautiful sunset. Reacting on impulse, I grabbed my camera and literally jumped out of our window to take some snap shots.

Luckily, our room was at the ground floor and the windows were as big as the door. My room mates were all caught in surprise, but I just had to seize the moment.

Oftentimes, opportunity comes across our path after a blind curve in our one-way road called "life", and those who approach it expecting and ready... usually reap the best rewards.

Am tagging moments of colours.

Kennon Road: Twist and Turn

Last week I attended a company conference in Baguio City. It was a 250KM drive North of Manila, ascending some 5100ft above sea-level. On the way up, we took Kennon Road. One of the three major connections to the city. It was the shortest, but also the steepest and most winding. Since it was already dark when we started our climb, we could only feel our shoulders swaying from left to right at each turn we made.
After the conference, we took the same route again on the way down. This time we stopped by to see the view.

Kennon Road was built in the 1903. Named after Col. Lyman W. Kennon, the one who supervised its completion. It took great perseverance for the builders, mostly Filipinos, Americans and Japanese to finish the enormous task.
Life's challenges are also full of twists and turns. Sometimes,we have to take long uphill climbs or even sharp descent. But it is only through perseverance that we can finish the course. We can not give up.
The good thing about it, is that, once you've done it you can look back and enjoy the view.

A Day in a Life of a Photo Blogger

For a photo blogger, nothing completes their day than to have a photo op excursion. For them it unlocks thousands of composition possibilities starting from the time they sit on the car and will last through the whole duration of the trip (or until their camera battery runs dry..lol!)
They love early morning or late afternoon day outs. During these times, the sun's rays are not too bright,giving the pictures a subtle dramatic effect.
What amazes me is when they go and look for that subject for a macro shot. I have always wanted to learn how they focus their lenses using macro.

I appreciated the time Maiylah shared with us during that day out and showed me some pointers in framing and capturing scenic pictures. What a day it was...

Homeward Bound

Still during our bird watching outing. Saw this pair of birds breezing through the sky before dark. They looked so relaxed yet eager to get to their destination.

No matter where we go, somehow the homeward bound trip is always more delightful. Especially when you are traveling with a companion.

Family Outing

It was the last day of summer vacation for my son Gelo. Then since my work assignment would limit our future outings, the whole family decided to do some bird watching together with his cousins in the nearby watershed.

Too bad we did not get to reach the actual site due to on going road repairs, but we still had quite some fun along the road. Using the binoculars, Gelo hunted for birds flying across the field, while the rest of us spread out for the photo op & did sky watching until dusk.

We might have missed the birds, but we sure did capture the moment.
